Yes, Even Brilliant People Have Inner Critics
Thu, Feb 5, 2009
Back in April of 1999, it was like any other Day in the Life of an Untalented Engineer (yours truly
), except for one thing that stood out from the rest.
On this day I read my horoscope in the Colorado Daily, where even though the author meant to inspire me for the weekend, it’s been a decade of re-inspiration by his timeless words.
Since these words have carried me through the worst of times, I wish to share them with you. May they benefit you as they have for me:
“I recently did some creative-coaching astrological work with a novelist client, who was doubting the validity of his literary achievements. I reminded him of what I will remind you.
A book called “Stephen Hero” was rescued, slightly toasted, from some fireplace by the sister of its author, James Joyce. The book became “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”
A friendly woman named Tabatha retrieved the manuscript of her husband Stephen’s first novel from a waste basket. The manuscript was for a book called “Carrie,” it’s author’s first and perhaps most famous work.
Yes, even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture are known to harbor their doubts.” ~Eric Francis
And so it seems, that even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture fall prey to their Inner Critics. Thankfully for us, those moments were sqooshed ![]()

Is there something you’d like to share with the world if only you weren’t afraid of public criticism? I hope you can allow yourself to celebrate in all your differences and do it anyway, because the world needs your special talents and contributions!

I love this quote…. it makes me feel better!
I’m so glad!
There is much love for you here
I love that story about Stephen King! He’s my very favorite author. It’s funny cause we all feel that way about certain things we do that we don’t think are good enough, but good enough for who? Screw it. Cool Blog!
@Meghan,
Hi, welcome to SqooshYourCritic! We are often the last ones to be objective about our work, even when it’s actually good stuff! Ya “screw it”, Lol. Thanks for your comment and by the way, I checked out your website and you’re a very talented florist! (Not just saying that, I’m actually quite picky when it comes to flower arrangements.)
Hi Carlota,
I came over to check out your new design and love the neat and clean header, with the subscription options so easily and attractively laid out. I’ve been wanting something like that for some time. Great job!
Isn’t it amazing how the best of us doubt ourselves? I heard the Stephen King story before about throwing away his manuscript for Carrie. All of us need someone to believe in us more than we do ourselves. Thanks for the inspiration!
Daphne’s last blog post…Site Update: Getting Better Everyday
@Daphne,
Thank you! I’m enjoying this new theme. It feels more dynamic and fun.
Yes, thank God we have wonderful people around us who can see the beauty in our works when we sometimes falter!
I’d love to share more openly about my thoughts into spirituality. But because I do have many religious friends and I know that some of them are reading my blog, I am hesitant in writing freely. Maybe, there’ll come a day when I’ll express my inner thoughts without reserve.
Evelyn Lim’s last blog post…Play The Wishing Game?
@Evelyn,
Thank you for sharing this with us! I can feel you on the “sharing” something that some people might not be open to. Actually, your blog is the first I’ve seen out there that’s about attracting abundance through healing your mind while touching on the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). After my first few posts on EFT I started to second-guess whether it was a good idea to post or not. Then I saw your blog and realized it was about me accepting that EFT is cool. So thank you for giving me permission to do the same.
I can see how sharing openly about your thoughts on spirituality might rub some people differently on your blog. I have some beliefs about it that could definitely send some readers elsewhere forever! I think it depends on who you want your audience to be, and what your intention is in sharing certain info on the blog. Maybe…start another blog? I’d totally hop over there and read up!
