Here are a few more of my favorite quotations to Sqoosh Your Inner Critic, I hope they empower you as they have in my life! Enjoy!

1. “Don’t worry about what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and do that because what the world needs are people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman

–> The world needs passionate people. When you do what makes you come alive, your passion gives others permission to do the same, and this brings deep healing and abundance to everyone in the world.

Amazing contributions come from passionate people who do what makes them come alive!

2. “Often what we think are ‘wrong’ with us are only our expressions of our own individuality. This is our uniqueness and what is special about us. Nature never repeats itself. Since time began on this planet, there have never been two snowflakes alike or two raindrops the same. And every daisy is different from every other daisy. Our fingerprints are different, and we are different. We are meant to be different. When we accept this, there is no competition and no comparison. To try to be like another is to shrivel our soul. We have come to this planet to express who we are.”

~ Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life

–> I like to read Hay’s words when my Inner Critic causes me to feel inferior compared to others because how I do things is “too different”, “odd”, “strange”, “eccentric”, or “not like normal people would do it”.

3. “One of the greatest fears you’ll confront is that you may not have any real value to offer others. As you begin to dump such brainwashing, you’ll soon recognize that you have the ability to provide enormous value to others and that people will gladly pay you for it.”

~ Steve Pavlina, author of Personal Development for Smart People: The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth

–> Once you turn towards passion and what to do for a living that incorporates what you’re passionate about, you might experience your inner critic telling you useless things like “you might be passionate about it, but you’re not that good at it!” You might also ask yourself “what are my talents?!” Only to draw a blank. Pavlina’s quote is useful in these situations (among many others!)

4. “All you really need is the courage to be yourself. Your real value is rooted in who you are, not what you do. The only thing you need actually do is express your real self to the world. You’ve been told all sort of likes as to why you can’t do that. But you’ll never know true happiness and fullfillment until you summon the courage to do it anyway.”

~ Steve Pavlina, author of Personal Development for Smart People

–> This can be easy to forget in our society, where the focus is on results and everyone seems to identify you by “what you do”. I have to remind myself that “what I did” and “what I didn’t do” are not “who I am”. With this in mind, it is easier to forgive and accept yourself

5. [ To be determined...by you?! ]

–> HELP!! When I came up with this blog post idea, I soon discovered that due to perfectionism and the “need” to keep all my books looking brand spankin’ new, none of my books were highlighted with my favorite quotes! You got me, I lied. I have only 4 to share with you today…

–>BUT, it’s no coincidence you’re reading this post, as the Law of Attraction brought you here today Blogs are about co-creation…if you have a powerful quote we would all appreciate you sharing it with us!! You can leave as many as you’d like in the comments box.

After seeing this prayer in more than 3 places, I've decided to take it more seriously and spend the next 30 days saying it out loud. Anyone want to join me?

Speaking positive affirmations out loud can turn your focus away from criticizing yourself and/or internalizing other people’s criticisms of you.

In order for us all to attract more prosperity in our lives, we must affirm that it is already ours, and by doing so we are sqooshing out our inner critic’s blurts (the ones that tell us we can’t attract more prosperity).

Joe Vitale (of The Secret) sent out this powerful prosperity prayer in his newsletter:

“I posted this prayer on my blog a few days ago
and so many people loved it that I thought I
would share it with you here, too. It was sent to
me by Will Bowen, author of A Complaint Free World, who said it was the greatest consciousness
conditioner available to attract prosperity.
Here it is…

~Prosperity Prayer~

Let’s start the conversation! Here we go…

Step 1. Understand that quitting isn’t a bad word…

Comment: “I think you are courageous and brave for reinventing yourself so many times… even though its been frustrating for you, it takes guts to be able to jump into something new every time you think something is not working.”

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of it as courageous, just something that had to be done. But I will definitely add this word to my collection

I’m a firm believer in quitting as many times as it takes to find your true calling, or at least purpose in life. Life is too short (or what I used to say, TOO DAMN LONG!) to be doing something you dislike.

Allowing yourself to quit on something that is just plain not working for you is a loving and honorable act. It shows that you care about your happiness. (It also subliminally gives others the permission to care about their own happiness.) Your staying at a job that you don’t enjoy doesn’t contribute much benefit and healing to the World.

I used to find it difficult to honor my happiness, and then I pondered this: My unhappiness was contagious because contrary to popular false belief, it didn’t make ANYONE happy.

I assumed wrongly that sacrificing my happiness for my parents’ happiness was a worthy cause. Actually, what I thought and what they thought would make them happy was also an illusion.

Instead what happened is I was working as an untalented unhappy engineer and that is one contribution the world does not need! (Not to mention, seeing me be so unhappy was depressing to them.)

So, following your dreams takes one tiny but transformational step: Intention to quit what isn’t working for you.

Step 2. Accept your transition style and stop comparing how others “do” change…

*

Comment: “I feel like I negotiate all the time, like I am much more cautious about my approach to making big changes. I like to have multiple plans in place before I make a leap just so that I try to minimize the chances of complete and abject failure. But in the process, I think this limits me from dreaming even larger…. sometimes in taking greater risks you also have chances for greater and bigger rewards.”

I think it’s important to note that it’s all about balance. You seem like someone who eases into making big changes in your life, and this helps you to transition smoothly. It’s a great trait to have, especially since while planning you are assessing which changes you are ready for. That takes honesty and acceptance of who you are in the present moment.

Many of us who desire changes in our lives become attached and try force-fitting it (a spin off of force-feeding, you like?!) into our present reality. We become impatient “I want it now! When will the goodies arrive??”

I’m someone who takes huge leaps into the unknown, and a lot of times because I came unprepared and wasn’t as ready for the changes as I thought I was, I got lots of scrapes and bruises along the way. However, I’ve made peace with my transition style (this can be an ongoing effort) and celebrate in the ways it has worked in my favor.

Let go of comparing how others “do” transition with how you “do” transition, as there is no right or wrong way. And what works for others may not work for you.

Criticizing yourself for your approach to making changes and manifesting the life you want is abusive and doesn’t allow for change to happen.

*

Step 3. Let go of regret and any limiting beliefs you adopted from past experiences of “taking risks” and “making changes”…

*

On the other hand, we all have to assess whether we are erring on the side of safety and protection due to past memories of “things not working out” or if there really is a reason to be cautious and it’s your intuition guiding you.

If it’s the past that’s haunting you, it might be worth looking into the limiting beliefs you adopted from those experiences–they may be faulty. As blame, shame, guilt and self-judgment often disillusion us from the real reasons things happened the way they did.

Comment “I chose to go to grad school for 2 years to learn these skills…There are benefits to me having done what I did (like creating contacts in my industry in New York), and disadvantages (such as a big student loan and loss of income/retirement savings for a few years). Its hard to tell at this point what would have been better.”

Wondering if choosing the other alternative would have gotten you to where you want to go faster is I think, irrelevant. And for what purpose? It may lead to regret and regret is useless.

The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how you get to where you want to go, just as long as you get there. Every path is perfect and unique in its own way; celebrate the wonderful gifts that the path you’ve chosen is giving you now.

I spent 6 years studying Engineering and I spent a lot of time regretting it. And then I realized that was a useless thing to do, as it would then negate the amazing friendships I made, that are still with me today.

You might not have the confirmation that going to graduate school was beneficial to your current goals/dreams until years down the road. But what I know for sure is, you will reap the rewards of that experience; one way or another.

…Regret is immobilizing and in the moment you are in regret, you are not creating the life you want.

You can choose only one thing at a time to do, shall it be regret or create?

What is your transition style and how has it worked in your favor? Is there a moment in your life where you once regretted a decision but then it turned out to benefit you after all?

How this book came into my life…

I was first introduced to this book back when I was a college student getting a bachelor’s degree in engineering. One of my best friends (still is ) bought this book and together we were the misfits of our Engineering School; completely in denial about our heart’s desire to lead a more creative path.

Well, okay. Not completely. We could admit to ourselves and each other that Engineering was our means of and not our way of life. Nonetheless, I quickly snatched up my own copy of The Artist’s Way for what it addressed beyond creativity: recovery from criticism and my own Inner Critic.

The first time I read through this book, I was going through subsequent exam failures and failed out of a college course (or two, okay maybe five!!). What got me through those moments of doubt, insecurity, and beating myself up was the gentle, poetic guidance of this book.

A decade after I bought this book I am now on the path I was meant to be on, that of a writer. Although it feels like I’ve come home and I am loving my new path, it’s in writing that all of my worst inner criticisms and fears bubble up. When I don’t address these criticisms and fears, I experience writer’s block—not something a person who writes for a living can afford to lounge around in!

Time and time again, reading and re-reading The Artist’s Way has helped me unblock and keep me on track with my Career Goals…

Healing words from criticism are peppered throughout The Artist’s Way:

“Progress, not perfection, is what we should be asking of ourselves.

Remember that in order to recover as an artist, you must be willing to be a bad artist.

You are not dumb, crazy, egomaniacal, grandiose, or silly just because you falsely believe yourself to be.

Useless criticism…is withering and shaming in tone; ambiguous in content; personal, inaccurate, or blanket in its condemnations.

There is nothing to be gleaned from irresponsible criticism.

Creativity is the only cure from criticism.”

What you will gain from reading this book:

Emotional freedom from your Inner Critic

Self-Reliance if you are emotionally Co-Dependent (are you built up by someone’s praise one moment only to be quickly torn down by another’s criticism?)

Unlock your creativity to attract abundance in all areas of your life: Financial Prosperity, Career Success, Emotional and Physical Wellness

Reconnect to who you really are (your authentic self) and feel Whole again

Align yourself with your forgotten passion and purpose in life

Recover from the oppression of negativity and its limiting beliefs

Learn to let go of relationships that no longer serve you (the “crazymakers” who sabotage your efforts to live honestly and create the life you desire)

The single most useful tool I’ve found in The Artist’s Way is the Morning Pages:

Three pages of stream of consciousness thoughts out on paper…

Through writing the Morning Pages I learned to be there for myself and simply listen to what my emotions had to say about things that were happening in my life. These Pages create a safe space to reflect, express fears and other uncomfortable emotions, and through them an amazing breakthrough happened: I began to strengthen my intuition and make better decisions for myself.

There are very few things I found wrong with this book, but…

Here are two areas I felt could use improvement:

Cameron is a stickler for writing the Morning Pages in the morning. But we are all human! There are days I didn’t get to the Morning Pages until the afternoon or evening. However, I discovered great benefits to writing mid-day or evening pages when I skipped the Morning ones (though the role of these pages differed from the morning ones). The author could have suggested that if you don’t write them in the morning, there’s still opportunity to write them later on in the day.

The author could have elaborated on the use of Anger to inspire action. In the book she gives the topic of anger barely one page—when it’s a biggie emotion. I could’ve used some tips on how to diffuse and transform it into taking creative action.

Other than that, The Artist’s Way is quite thorough in sqooshing all the ways the Inner Critic manifests blockages that’s holding you back from creating the life of your dreams.

Whether you are new to healing your life or just shy of getting there, this book has resources and insights that will help you through each stage of your journey.

Have you read The Artist’s Way? What did you think of this book?
If you haven’t read it, do you have any questions I can help you to answer? Feel free to drop it in the comment box below.

Back in April of 1999, it was like any other Day in the Life of an Untalented Engineer (yours truly ), except for one thing that stood out from the rest.

On this day I read my horoscope in the Colorado Daily, where even though the author meant to inspire me for the weekend, it’s been a decade of re-inspiration by his timeless words.

Since these words have carried me through the worst of times, I wish to share them with you. May they benefit you as they have for me:

“I recently did some creative-coaching astrological work with a novelist client, who was doubting the validity of his literary achievements. I reminded him of what I will remind you.

A book called “Stephen Hero” was rescued, slightly toasted, from some fireplace by the sister of its author, James Joyce. The book became “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”

A friendly woman named Tabatha retrieved the manuscript of her husband Stephen’s first novel from a waste basket. The manuscript was for a book called “Carrie,” it’s author’s first and perhaps most famous work.

Yes, even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture are known to harbor their doubts.” ~Eric Francis

And so it seems, that even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture fall prey to their Inner Critics. Thankfully for us, those moments were sqooshed

***

Is there something you’d like to share with the world if only you weren’t afraid of public criticism? I hope you can allow yourself to celebrate in all your differences and do it anyway, because the world needs your special talents and contributions!

Just wanted to share a very cool video on how a negative script that you might’ve been playing in your mind can be reversed!!

I first saw it on the Joyful Days blog, “How does your life script read?”

Click here to view the embedded video.

What do you think of this video? (Remember to leave me feedback so I know what to post more of!)

I was quite depressed by the forward version of it. Goes to show what your own limiting beliefs can do to you!

I decided to make a little ditty of my own:

When you get criticized

Stop Creating

And don’t

Keep Trying

When others disapprove

Let go of your personal power

And don’t

Continue manifesting your Dreams

I definitely feel better about the backwards version of it:

Continue manifesting your Dreams

And don’t

Let go of your personal power

When others disapprove

Keep trying

And don’t

Stop creating

When you get Criticized

If you come up with your own negative-to-positive script, please share it with us in the “Leave a Reply” box!

Limiting Belief

But I’m not an expert!

Positive Affirmation

Even though I’m not an expert at anything, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway…And I’m willing to instead, focus on the personal experiences I can share with others so that we can all learn from each other.

***

“At what point will I become an expert?!”

I came across this 2-part article on “Becoming an Expert” (part one and part two).

Here’s a snippet that I feel hit a cord with me:

“To become a self-publishing expert, I joined the Self-Publishing Yahoo group, and asked a bunch of questions. The people there were very helpful and informative. I also bought and read a couple of books on self-publishing. But by the time I read one of the books, I already knew two-thirds of the material from my web research. I could have practically written that book! The bar to being an expert is far lower than we’re led to believe.”

Kyeli and Pace (authors of The Usual Error) make some insights that I can definitely relate to, and I wish I had come across these articles when I first started to go public with my writing!

Reading these two articles have also inspired me to muse about my own journey to claiming expert status.

During the first few weeks of starting this blog I would say to myself, “But I’m not an expert! All I know is I’ve tried a lot of things; some things worked and some things haven’t. I just want to share what I know…is this enough?!”

For days I would go on and on about this, firmly believing that I needed to answer this question and feel like an expert before I could go on and publicize my Blog and write the ebooks I had planned.

I asked friends and mentors what they thought: “Am I an expert? What defines an expert? What am I an expert of? How can I feel more like an expert? Am I even qualified to write on a Blog about recovering from Inner Criticisms? I know some things but my journey isn’t over yet…I still battle with my Inner Critic demon in some areas of my life…Does this mean I’m unqualified to write and teach about it?”

The tipping point…

The interesting thing I discovered about focusing on whether or not I was an expert is that in doing so, I was no longer connected to the reason why I wanted to start SqooshYourCritic. And that reason was to share my personal journey and tips, insights, resources that have helped me succeed at gaining emotional freedom from my Inner Critic.

Focusing on “Am I an expert?” seemed like a dead-end.

Ask yourself a different question…

I didn’t receive any beneficial answers from that and so I decided to try something else, asking myself a new question: “What do I have to share with my readers that could help them recover from their Inner Critics?”

This question prompted me to write an on-going list of things I felt were valuable in my own recovery that could be shared on this Blog. The result was a lot more freeing and allowed me to follow through on launching this Blog and sticking to it.

So maybe, the QBQ (Question Behind the Question) is this:

What can you share with others so that they can learn from your experiences?

What defines experience?

What I’ve had to remind myself is that there are many ways to draw upon “experience”:

Books I’ve read that helped me

Words people have said to me that upon hearing I found deep healing, or had an “ah-Ha!” moment

Projects that didn’t work out, and Why (formerly known as “failures” )

Projects that did work out, and Why

Incidences in my life where I did something the hard way and now wish for others to learn the “easy” way–From me

The answer is…

So to answer the question, “At what point will I become an expert?” I believe the answer is: When I decided to see myself as someone whose knowledge and experience could help some ONE out there in the World. It doesn’t mean that I think I have all the answers, nor does it mean that I think I’m done learning. I simply have some knowledge and some successes that I can start helping others who find themselves in similar situations I had been in.

In my last post Perfectionism and What You Really Mean by Saying “I can’t…”, I confessed my own battle with perfectionism (yes, I know…the irony of writing a blog about Sqooshing Your Inner Critic and then to deal with my own bouts of self-criticism! But hey, growth happens in spirals, people!)

Today I came across a hidden gem on how to kick perfectionism to the curb so that you can have, be, and do more to create the life of your dreams. Perfectionism can sprout as a side effect of dealing with your Inner Critic…if it becomes a dominant trait it can sabotage your ability to be productive, finish projects, and achieve the success of your dreams.

This hidden gem is an mp3 interview with Jessica Ortner (Producer of Try It On Everything) and the famous EFT Master Practitioner, Dr. Carol Look.

You can download it for FREE here: EFT for Perfectionism

If you are new to EFT, I strongly suggest getting a quickie introduction from this page, which shows a diagram of all the tapping points so you can tap along with Dr. Carol and Jessica Ortner.

Even if you choose not to tap along while listening to the mp3, the interview is still packed with insight on understanding perfectionism:

“You will learn:

Why you have trouble completing things

Why you feel stuck

What questions to ask yourself to discover the real block

How to end self sabotage.”

After I tapped along with the mp3, I met up with my family to have coffee and my sister asked me, “Did you get much done on your website today?”

“Yes! I always get something done on it every day!” I blurted.

This really surprised me for 3 reasons:

I didn’t hesitate for a few seconds to come up with something positive to say about my progress.

For the past few weeks I’ve been feeling like I can never get enough done.

Suddenly, I was acknowledging my daily accomplishments without having to force myself to.

For additional information on EFT, you may want to read my article: Why Don’t Positive Affirmations Alone Work?

If after listening to the mp3, you find that it worked for you and would like to discover how EFT can apply to other issues in your life, I strongly suggest watching the movie Try It On Everything.

Thanks to Karen Nauman of TapIntoEFT.com who generously shared this “EFT on Perfectionism” interview with me

Limiting Belief

I can’t write a hundred blog posts!

Positive Affirmation

Even though I can’t write a hundred blog posts, because if I can’t be perfect at it then why bother, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway. I’m willing to let go of my need to be perfect. I choose to move forward and share my writing with others who may benefit from it, just the way it is.

One of the desires I want to manifest for myself is to have 100 blog posts up on SqooshYourCritic.

That means I will have written anywhere between 100 to 200 pages of words. That’s equivalent to the length of a few ebooks or at least one published book.

So far I have published 15 blog posts (not including the positive affirmations posted on my “Asides” mini-blog located on the right hand sidebar).

Today I was frustrated with this concept of knowing I can write more articles than I’ve actually produced, so what’s the hold up?

I’ve been working on writing a review for The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity [10th Anniversary Edition], and found Cameron’s blurb on taking risks and perfectionism:

“QUESTION: What would I do if I didn’t have to do it perfectly?

ANSWER: A great deal more than I am.”

I laughed out loud about this and admitted I have some work to do regarding perfectionism, an addiction I’m still in rehab for.

Julia Cameron explains in her book that,

“In order to risk, we must jettison our accepted limits. We must break through ‘I can’t because…’ Usually, when we say we can’t do something, what we mean is that we won’t do something unless we can guarantee that we’ll do it perfectly. With that as an unspoken demand, a great many things remain outside our sphere of possibility.”

So this week I’m going to repeat the positive affirmation I wrote at the top of this post and take it easy on the rewrites

Feel free to tweak the affirmation to work for you.

I’ve also been listing off reasons why I believe I need to constantly edit while I write. I think that bringing these fears into the light will help me sort through which ones have been blown out of proportion by irrationality and a wandering mind that is sometimes attracted to drama.

Limiting Belief

Maybe he’s right, going to graduate school might be a waste of time.

Positive Affirmation

Even though going to graduate school is a waste of time, I deeply and completely accept myself for having this belief. I choose to let this limiting belief go, and follow my heart anyway; knowing that everything I do in life is a valuable experience.

I have a close friend who wants to go back to school to get a Master’s Degree in Finance.

Knowing that she is in a fragile phase of deciding what’s best for her and is prone to absorbing other people’s opinions and beliefs, I suggested that she be cautious of who she told about this new direction she was considering taking.

She expressed her disappointment and frustration (not to mention heightened insecurity) to me after she told her business partner (he is a savvy Real Estate Agent who has made some impressive deals) that she’s thinking about getting a Master’s Degree.

He told her that it was essentially “A waste of time.” And that “maybe you’re trying to run away from the Real World and want to hide out in Grad School for a while.”

–This entire scenario is destructive on many levels:

Being in the “about to make a decision” place is a fragile phase of the manifestation process. Especially if you have a HUGE Inner Critic, it can cause uncertainty where if enough attention is put on the doubts of others–can become insecurity.

Sharing your desire, or even daydream to do something with someone who you know will be a naysayer and what I like to call a “misfortune-teller” is one of the most common causes of abandoned talent and aspirations.

Confiding in someone who is protecting his/her own interests (in my friend’s case her business partner felt her going back to school posed a threat to their Real Estate business), to share your potential plans with can create confusion around your desires (as this person may convince you that what they want is really what you want) and talk you out of manifesting what is truly in your heart.

Even if you go ahead and pursue your dreams/goals, the negative words of others may become your subconscious core beliefs where you could find yourself experiencing setbacks and failures because in the back of your mind you are thinking, “That guy may be right, I’m definitely struggling and what a huge waste of time this feels like!” There’s nothing worse than your own subconscious beliefs working against you!

Telling others about your dreams and goals (especially those who aren’t supportive) can create a creative energy leakage.
