Here are a few more of my favorite quotations to Sqoosh Your Inner Critic, I hope they empower you as they have in my life! Enjoy!

1. “Don’t worry about what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive and do that because what the world needs are people who have come alive.” ~Howard Thurman

–> The world needs passionate people. When you do what makes you come alive, your passion gives others permission to do the same, and this brings deep healing and abundance to everyone in the world.

Amazing contributions come from passionate people who do what makes them come alive!

2. “Often what we think are ‘wrong’ with us are only our expressions of our own individuality. This is our uniqueness and what is special about us. Nature never repeats itself. Since time began on this planet, there have never been two snowflakes alike or two raindrops the same. And every daisy is different from every other daisy. Our fingerprints are different, and we are different. We are meant to be different. When we accept this, there is no competition and no comparison. To try to be like another is to shrivel our soul. We have come to this planet to express who we are.”

~ Louise Hay, author of You Can Heal Your Life

–> I like to read Hay’s words when my Inner Critic causes me to feel inferior compared to others because how I do things is “too different”, “odd”, “strange”, “eccentric”, or “not like normal people would do it”.

3. “One of the greatest fears you’ll confront is that you may not have any real value to offer others. As you begin to dump such brainwashing, you’ll soon recognize that you have the ability to provide enormous value to others and that people will gladly pay you for it.”

~ Steve Pavlina, author of Personal Development for Smart People: The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth

–> Once you turn towards passion and what to do for a living that incorporates what you’re passionate about, you might experience your inner critic telling you useless things like “you might be passionate about it, but you’re not that good at it!” You might also ask yourself “what are my talents?!” Only to draw a blank. Pavlina’s quote is useful in these situations (among many others!)

4. “All you really need is the courage to be yourself. Your real value is rooted in who you are, not what you do. The only thing you need actually do is express your real self to the world. You’ve been told all sort of likes as to why you can’t do that. But you’ll never know true happiness and fullfillment until you summon the courage to do it anyway.”

~ Steve Pavlina, author of Personal Development for Smart People

–> This can be easy to forget in our society, where the focus is on results and everyone seems to identify you by “what you do”. I have to remind myself that “what I did” and “what I didn’t do” are not “who I am”. With this in mind, it is easier to forgive and accept yourself

5. [ To be determined...by you?! ]

–> HELP!! When I came up with this blog post idea, I soon discovered that due to perfectionism and the “need” to keep all my books looking brand spankin’ new, none of my books were highlighted with my favorite quotes! You got me, I lied. I have only 4 to share with you today…

–>BUT, it’s no coincidence you’re reading this post, as the Law of Attraction brought you here today Blogs are about co-creation…if you have a powerful quote we would all appreciate you sharing it with us!! You can leave as many as you’d like in the comments box.

Hi-i!

I came across a wonderful discussion group called “Easy World” (founded by Julia Rogers Hamrick) on the Powerful Intentions forum.

The Powerful Intentions forum is a *FREE* place to express your intentions for manifesting fabulous life and getting the Law of Attraction to work for you.

In this forum, anyone can post questions on how to attract abundance, love, happiness, health, money, peace, doo-dads, positive relationships with family members, ideal career and better paying jobs, etc.

A few of you may know that I spend most of my free time on this forum; everyone is so helpful, welcoming and quick to help who ever is in need.

It is so easy to lift up your spirits and escape your merciless inner critic when you have a forum of friends that are enthusiastic, warm, open, and allow you to be yourself (warts and all, LOL!).

Anyway, back to Easy World…

One of the discussions I’m participating in is “Daily Dose Of The Magic Words!” where everyone can join in and say:

“I choose to live in Easy World where everything is easy!”

I read line after line of people saying this phrase, sometimes with a personal visualization of how they are now living in “Easy World” and what it looks like for them.

I then found myself saying,

“I live in easy world where writing my next blog post is easy. It’s easy for me to come up with a topic, and the words just flow easily onto my wordpress editor. Even finding an image to go with the blog post is easy, I find the perfect image quickly.”

…You see, I was actually procrastinating writing my next blog post and was poking around on the Powerful Intentions forum instead.

After reading the “Easy World” discussion, an idea for a blog post suddenly came to mind, and I left the forum to quickly write a blog post…45 minutes after reading “I choose to live in Easy World where everything is easy!”

Do you have anything going on in your life that you find “difficult” to do, be, have, attract, or create?

Come join me in Easy World by commenting below this post with your version of:

“I choose to live in Easy World where everything is easy!”

Three years ago, I had a coffee shop in this suburban town called Lakewood, Colorado. It was a really vibrant shop with many shades of the creative color orange.

I had so many ideas for hosting meetups there. Every time I had a brilliant idea I quickly told my sister and everyone else around me. One of my ideas was to host a free showing of the movie The Secret, and customers could enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while watching it.

I ran this idea by my friends and family. Most were supportive, except for one, who said “I don’t know, Carlota, this is Lakewood and I’m not sure that many people would be open to a movie like that.”

At that point in my life I hadn’t done much work on self-acceptance and listening to my inner guide, so I had the habit of gobbling up discouragement.

So, you guessed it, I went around in circles of doubt, self-criticism, eating up discouragement and…Didn’t end up hosting a single event for months.

For some reason I got inspired to see a psychic reader (I prefer the term “Life Coach”, but whatever, LOL!) In the session I asked her what sort of events to host at the coffee shop that would bring in dozens more customers.

I named off a few of my ideas and she told me my lesson in this life is to strengthen my intuition.

My response? I started to explain why I felt those ideas wouldn’t work. I said things like, “But I’m not sure Lakewood is ready for something like The Secret. What if instead of bringing in more business, I end up driving away existing customers?”

Then she said, “STOP. Take a deep breath. You have a choice. You can only do one thing at a time. You can either criticize yourself or create. Which do you want to do?”

I sat there pondering her theory and then asked, “But I can criticize while I create…can’t I? It seems I’ve done this all my life…”

“No, you can not.” She said. “At any given moment, you can only do one thing at a time. You can either listen to other people’s criticism, or you can create. You can criticize yourself about a hypothetical creation, or you can create. In any case, you won’t have anything real to criticize if you haven’t created anything yet.“

ah Hah! I finally understood it. Those who criticize, are not in that moment creating. Those who are fully immersed in the act of creating, are in that moment, not criticizing.

What are your thoughts on this theory? If it resonates with you, where in your life have you witnessed this truth?

P.S., I did end up hosting The Secret event. And the amazing thing is, I had a full house that night, and 90% of these people didn’t come to see The Secret, but were energetically attracted to the small crowd who did. The Law of Attraction works in astonishing ways, doesn’t it? You never know what will happen in your life, until you step out of criticism and into creation.

Here’s to sqooshing YOUR inner critic!

Love,

Carlota

Speaking positive affirmations out loud can turn your focus away from criticizing yourself and/or internalizing other people’s criticisms of you.

In order for us all to attract more prosperity in our lives, we must affirm that it is already ours, and by doing so we are sqooshing out our inner critic’s blurts (the ones that tell us we can’t attract more prosperity).

Joe Vitale (of The Secret) sent out this powerful prosperity prayer in his newsletter:

I once had a Law of Attraction mentor who I met with once a week. My intention in working with her was to attract double the number of clients for the hotel I was marketing.

To start off our session, she would ask “How are you today?”

And my response for several weeks were different variations of “Oh, I could be doing better. I’m disappointed that I didn’t [do this, do that]. And I spent so long working on [this mailing piece] instead of something more productive like [driving traffic to our new website]. I know criticizing my work delays attracting what I want…but I can’t seem to stop criticizing myself for criticizing myself!”

She listened to my negative self-talk for several weeks about why I couldn’t seem to quickly attract double the number of clients we currently had, and would suggest different tools for countering my self-judgments and feelings of “not doing and being good enough.”

It wasn’t until one week she gave me a certain homework assignment.

It was SO simple that I didn’t believe it would work!

After one week of spending 5 minutes doing this homework assignment, I saw incredible changes: My outlook on life was brighter, I felt more authentically confident, I was more accepting of myself, I enjoyed my job more, and best of all, I had sqooshed some inner criticism and self-judgment that was preventing me from attracting what I wanted.

Now, I’m passing this technique along to you, free of charge :

Every day, take 5 minutes to write down 5 things you appreciate of yourself. This list can include anything: Things you accomplished in the past or just recently, things you like about yourself, things you are proud you did or are currently doing, something you said to someone that really made their day, etc.

To kick-start this, here is my list of 5 things I appreciate myself for today:

Being friends with 2 people for over a decade!

Juicing my fruit and veggies 3x a week this month.

Finished writing my ebook today, “59 Powerful Affirmations to Sqoosh Your Inner Critic!”

Helped a friend boost her confidence and self-image.

Complimented my sister on her cooking talents.

*

Did you like this homework assignment? Do you feel it can become a part of your daily “sqoosh your inner critic” routine?

Anything else you’d like to add to this conversation? Remember to add your comments below!

A while ago I received a comment in response to Confessions of a Successful Quitter, where I wrote about quitting careers in order to go for your dreams. It was such an amazing piece of feedback that I’ve decided to respond to it by creating a dedicated post! (Or maybe more, we’ll see how it goes.)

Let’s start the conversation! Here we go…

Step 1. Understand that quitting isn’t a bad word…

Comment: “I think you are courageous and brave for reinventing yourself so many times… even though its been frustrating for you, it takes guts to be able to jump into something new every time you think something is not working.”

Thank you! I hadn’t thought of it as courageous, just something that had to be done. But I will definitely add this word to my collection

I’m a firm believer in quitting as many times as it takes to find your true calling, or at least purpose in life. Life is too short (or what I used to say, TOO DAMN LONG!) to be doing something you dislike.

Allowing yourself to quit on something that is just plain not working for you is a loving and honorable act. It shows that you care about your happiness. (It also subliminally gives others the permission to care about their own happiness.) Your staying at a job that you don’t enjoy doesn’t contribute much benefit and healing to the World.

I used to find it difficult to honor my happiness, and then I pondered this: My unhappiness was contagious because contrary to popular false belief, it didn’t make ANYONE happy.

I assumed wrongly that sacrificing my happiness for my parents’ happiness was a worthy cause. Actually, what I thought and what they thought would make them happy was also an illusion.

Instead what happened is I was working as an untalented unhappy engineer and that is one contribution the world does not need! (Not to mention, seeing me be so unhappy was depressing to them.)

So, following your dreams takes one tiny but transformational step: Intention to quit what isn’t working for you.

Step 2. Accept your transition style and stop comparing how others “do” change…

*

Comment: “I feel like I negotiate all the time, like I am much more cautious about my approach to making big changes. I like to have multiple plans in place before I make a leap just so that I try to minimize the chances of complete and abject failure. But in the process, I think this limits me from dreaming even larger…. sometimes in taking greater risks you also have chances for greater and bigger rewards.”

I think it’s important to note that it’s all about balance. You seem like someone who eases into making big changes in your life, and this helps you to transition smoothly. It’s a great trait to have, especially since while planning you are assessing which changes you are ready for. That takes honesty and acceptance of who you are in the present moment.

Many of us who desire changes in our lives become attached and try force-fitting it (a spin off of force-feeding, you like?!) into our present reality. We become impatient “I want it now! When will the goodies arrive??”

I’m someone who takes huge leaps into the unknown, and a lot of times because I came unprepared and wasn’t as ready for the changes as I thought I was, I got lots of scrapes and bruises along the way. However, I’ve made peace with my transition style (this can be an ongoing effort) and celebrate in the ways it has worked in my favor.

Let go of comparing how others “do” transition with how you “do” transition, as there is no right or wrong way. And what works for others may not work for you.

Criticizing yourself for your approach to making changes and manifesting the life you want is abusive and doesn’t allow for change to happen.

*

Step 3. Let go of regret and any limiting beliefs you adopted from past experiences of “taking risks” and “making changes”…

*

On the other hand, we all have to assess whether we are erring on the side of safety and protection due to past memories of “things not working out” or if there really is a reason to be cautious and it’s your intuition guiding you.

If it’s the past that’s haunting you, it might be worth looking into the limiting beliefs you adopted from those experiences–they may be faulty. As blame, shame, guilt and self-judgment often disillusion us from the real reasons things happened the way they did.

Comment “I chose to go to grad school for 2 years to learn these skills…There are benefits to me having done what I did (like creating contacts in my industry in New York), and disadvantages (such as a big student loan and loss of income/retirement savings for a few years). Its hard to tell at this point what would have been better.”

Wondering if choosing the other alternative would have gotten you to where you want to go faster is I think, irrelevant. And for what purpose? It may lead to regret and regret is useless.

The important thing to remember is that it doesn’t matter how you get to where you want to go, just as long as you get there. Every path is perfect and unique in its own way; celebrate the wonderful gifts that the path you’ve chosen is giving you now.

I spent 6 years studying Engineering and I spent a lot of time regretting it. And then I realized that was a useless thing to do, as it would then negate the amazing friendships I made, that are still with me today.

You might not have the confirmation that going to graduate school was beneficial to your current goals/dreams until years down the road. But what I know for sure is, you will reap the rewards of that experience; one way or another.

…Regret is immobilizing and in the moment you are in regret, you are not creating the life you want.

You can choose only one thing at a time to do, shall it be regret or create?

What is your transition style and how has it worked in your favor? Is there a moment in your life where you once regretted a decision but then it turned out to benefit you after all?

How this book came into my life…

I was first introduced to this book back when I was a college student getting a bachelor’s degree in engineering. One of my best friends (still is ) bought this book and together we were the misfits of our Engineering School; completely in denial about our heart’s desire to lead a more creative path.

Well, okay. Not completely. We could admit to ourselves and each other that Engineering was our means of and not our way of life. Nonetheless, I quickly snatched up my own copy of The Artist’s Way for what it addressed beyond creativity: recovery from criticism and my own Inner Critic.

The first time I read through this book, I was going through subsequent exam failures and failed out of a college course (or two, okay maybe five!!). What got me through those moments of doubt, insecurity, and beating myself up was the gentle, poetic guidance of this book.

A decade after I bought this book I am now on the path I was meant to be on, that of a writer. Although it feels like I’ve come home and I am loving my new path, it’s in writing that all of my worst inner criticisms and fears bubble up. When I don’t address these criticisms and fears, I experience writer’s block—not something a person who writes for a living can afford to lounge around in!

Time and time again, reading and re-reading The Artist’s Way has helped me unblock and keep me on track with my Career Goals…

Healing words from criticism are peppered throughout The Artist’s Way:

“Progress, not perfection, is what we should be asking of ourselves.

Remember that in order to recover as an artist, you must be willing to be a bad artist.

You are not dumb, crazy, egomaniacal, grandiose, or silly just because you falsely believe yourself to be.

Useless criticism…is withering and shaming in tone; ambiguous in content; personal, inaccurate, or blanket in its condemnations.

There is nothing to be gleaned from irresponsible criticism.

Creativity is the only cure from criticism.”

What you will gain from reading this book:

Emotional freedom from your Inner Critic

Self-Reliance if you are emotionally Co-Dependent (are you built up by someone’s praise one moment only to be quickly torn down by another’s criticism?)

Unlock your creativity to attract abundance in all areas of your life: Financial Prosperity, Career Success, Emotional and Physical Wellness

Reconnect to who you really are (your authentic self) and feel Whole again

Align yourself with your forgotten passion and purpose in life

Recover from the oppression of negativity and its limiting beliefs

Learn to let go of relationships that no longer serve you (the “crazymakers” who sabotage your efforts to live honestly and create the life you desire)

The single most useful tool I’ve found in The Artist’s Way is the Morning Pages:

Three pages of stream of consciousness thoughts out on paper…

Through writing the Morning Pages I learned to be there for myself and simply listen to what my emotions had to say about things that were happening in my life. These Pages create a safe space to reflect, express fears and other uncomfortable emotions, and through them an amazing breakthrough happened: I began to strengthen my intuition and make better decisions for myself.

There are very few things I found wrong with this book, but…

Here are two areas I felt could use improvement:

Cameron is a stickler for writing the Morning Pages in the morning. But we are all human! There are days I didn’t get to the Morning Pages until the afternoon or evening. However, I discovered great benefits to writing mid-day or evening pages when I skipped the Morning ones (though the role of these pages differed from the morning ones). The author could have suggested that if you don’t write them in the morning, there’s still opportunity to write them later on in the day.

The author could have elaborated on the use of Anger to inspire action. In the book she gives the topic of anger barely one page—when it’s a biggie emotion. I could’ve used some tips on how to diffuse and transform it into taking creative action.

Other than that, The Artist’s Way is quite thorough in sqooshing all the ways the Inner Critic manifests blockages that’s holding you back from creating the life of your dreams.

Whether you are new to healing your life or just shy of getting there, this book has resources and insights that will help you through each stage of your journey.

Have you read The Artist’s Way? What did you think of this book?
If you haven’t read it, do you have any questions I can help you to answer? Feel free to drop it in the comment box below.

Back in April of 1999, it was like any other Day in the Life of an Untalented Engineer (yours truly ), except for one thing that stood out from the rest.

On this day I read my horoscope in the Colorado Daily, where even though the author meant to inspire me for the weekend, it’s been a decade of re-inspiration by his timeless words.

Since these words have carried me through the worst of times, I wish to share them with you. May they benefit you as they have for me:

“I recently did some creative-coaching astrological work with a novelist client, who was doubting the validity of his literary achievements. I reminded him of what I will remind you.

A book called “Stephen Hero” was rescued, slightly toasted, from some fireplace by the sister of its author, James Joyce. The book became “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.”

A friendly woman named Tabatha retrieved the manuscript of her husband Stephen’s first novel from a waste basket. The manuscript was for a book called “Carrie,” it’s author’s first and perhaps most famous work.

Yes, even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture are known to harbor their doubts.” ~Eric Francis

And so it seems, that even brilliant people who are about to rock the culture fall prey to their Inner Critics. Thankfully for us, those moments were sqooshed

***

Is there something you’d like to share with the world if only you weren’t afraid of public criticism? I hope you can allow yourself to celebrate in all your differences and do it anyway, because the world needs your special talents and contributions!

Last week I got interrupted by a close friend. A host of insecurities and angry thoughts bubbled up...

Um…ya. That’s a trick question. Because the truth is, I can’t. Sorry!! None of us can.

But what we can do is change how we feel when someone interrupts us mid-sentence. And more importantly, what we think about ourselves after it’s happened.

***

When my friend interrupted me…

Last week I got interrupted by a close friend. It happens occasionally, and my usual reaction is to listen to my Inner Critic who says “its nothing, stop being so petty!”

So I had let this issue slide with my friend time and time again. I tried to convince myself that “it isn’t worth it, you have to act as if it doesn’t bother you and eventually it won’t bother you!”

I think the problem with that tactic is that this saying still holds true:

“What you resist persists.”

I’ve been resisting accepting that when my friend interrupts me while I’m in the middle of talking, it upsets me. A host of insecurities and angry thoughts bubbled up.

The writings on my wall…

“What I say isn’t worthy of her hearing! She’s cutting me off because she doesn’t feel I have anything important to say! Why doesn’t she just–get a dummy doll who will sit there silently and listen to her talk, but doesn’t say anything back?! Am I simply not worthy of being heard?? How can she be bored already, I only said 3 words so far! Maybe I should just, stop trying to express myself around her (it’s just not safe)…”

These are the writings on my wall that for years I didn’t confront.

The emotions behind this “my friend always interrupts me” trigger were all due to the limiting beliefs of my Inner Critic.

Until now…

I finally decided to surrender…

I got to work accepting that I felt marginalized, and that there were writings on my wall that never really benefited me. These limiting beliefs were what gave away my personal power and kept me feeling insecure about myself.

For years they served their purpose: To keep me feeling victimized and to prove that this world was an unfriendly place. But now I’ve recognized that these writings are not only false, they are painful to carry with me every time I find myself “getting interrupted” by someone.

It had been a few weeks since I last did an EFT session on myself…so I decided it was time for another one. The results of this EFT* session were so liberating and healing that I wanted to share how I did it with you.

*If doing EFT healing doesn’t resonate with you, that’s okay, you can still receive great benefits from writing out your limiting beliefs followed by positive affirmations the way I’ve outlined below.

How I let go of the negative writings on my wall…

Even if you don’t have a problem with people interrupting you while you’re talking, the script I used is also good for if you have a fear that what you want to say isn’t “good enough” or “isn’t safe” to express around certain people (feel free to tweak the phrases to suit your issues).

I started off with a few neutralizing statements. Here’s a piece of it:

“Even though my friend interrupts me, I’m not worthy of speaking, I deeply and completely love and accept myself…And I’m willing to feel worthy of speaking anyway.

Even though I just don’t have permission to speak, it’s not safe…I give myself permission and I’m willing to let go of needing other people to give me that permission.”

Then I had an all-out vent session and entertained my inner child. I let myself rant, whine, and complain…listening and validating that I felt hurt and slighted. (Whoo! That felt good )

The affirmations I used to rewrite my wall…

Then I proceeded to rewrite the writings on my wall by expanding my list of positive choices and affirmations. If you’d like to write some of your own, here’s a snippet (from my session) to get the ball rolling for you:

“I choose to let go of taking her interrupting me personally.

I’m willing to forgive her, and all the interrupters from my past.

I now allow myself to feel worthy of expressing myself verbally.

It’s safe for me to say what’s on my mind.

The only person that needs to validate me is me.

I’m willing to let go of my need for others to validate me for what I say.”

The results of my self-healing session…

After this self-healing session of rewriting my beliefs, I felt that I truly let go of my resentments in getting interrupted. I’ve noticed that when I get interrupted now, by anyone, I’m relaxed about it and know that eventually I’ll get to say what I meant to.

I also experienced something surprising from her end: Since rewriting my beliefs, she started to catch herself about to interrupt me on a few occasions.

That goes to show that changing your reality is an inside job. Before others change, you must let go of your own limiting beliefs about yourself and the world around you.

***

Have you ever been interrupted? How did you make peace with it?

Please share your story with us! And let me know what you think of this post by dropping a comment in the “Leave a Reply” box

Just wanted to share a very cool video on how a negative script that you might’ve been playing in your mind can be reversed!!

I first saw it on the Joyful Days blog, “How does your life script read?”

Click here to view the embedded video.

What do you think of this video? (Remember to leave me feedback so I know what to post more of!)

I was quite depressed by the forward version of it. Goes to show what your own limiting beliefs can do to you!

I decided to make a little ditty of my own:

When you get criticized

Stop Creating

And don’t

Keep Trying

When others disapprove

Let go of your personal power

And don’t

Continue manifesting your Dreams

I definitely feel better about the backwards version of it:

Continue manifesting your Dreams

And don’t

Let go of your personal power

When others disapprove

Keep trying

And don’t

Stop creating

When you get Criticized

If you come up with your own negative-to-positive script, please share it with us in the “Leave a Reply” box!
